Introducing 'New In Linux'

A look at what's happening and who's behind New In Linux.

Hey there, I'm Jordan Gloor, a tech journalist starting a new blog called New In Linux. I'll be covering news about GNU/Linux operating systems and other free and open source software that interests me as a user of those operating systems.

Umm, why?

My main goal is to see what happens when I write news about updates to Linux and FOSS apps in a format that I find intuitive and legitimately useful.

  • A lot of news I read annoys me the way it's informed by advertiser obligations, word count minimums, and legacy conventions that result in meaningless fluff you have to manually filter.
  • Worse, news is increasingly generated with LLMs, which is untrustworthy at best. Not to mention they completely lack the human perspective that's vital for contextualizing the news.

I just want news about what's new in Linux delivered to me in a way that cuts to the chase and then gets out of my way. I want to know that the person writing the news article is grounded in reality and actually has hands-on experience with the topic at hand. I also appreciate when journalists are frank about their bias and opinions.

In other words: I'm experimenting with being the change I wish to see in the world.

And just who do you think you are?

Let's answer some questions I know you might have:

  • What are your credentials as a journalist? I was an editor for over four years at How-To Geek, and I also have bylines at MakeUseOf and Ozarks Farm & Neighbor. Yes, I used to write about agriculture. You can read more about me at my personal website.
  • Isn't this a terrible time to start a tech blog? Maybe, but there's only one way to find out for certain.
  • Are you generating text or image on this site using AI? No.

Whew, you're really grilling me here, so that's enough for now. I'm going to start publishing as often as I can on the free software I care about and see how things go. I've not written my own newsletter before, but I'm going to figure that out and start that up too.

I hope you enjoy reading all of it. If you have feedback for me, feel free to reach out to me on social media or via email. Until then, stay free.
