The self-hosted streaming app Feishin got a major update

Listening to music via Jellyfin, OpenSubsonic, or Navidrome? This app just got new themes and better organizing and reporting tools.

The developers of Feishin, a music streaming app for self-hosted servers, announced the release of Feishin 1.12.0 this week. It brings several small but notable new features after debuting a Linux Flatpak last month.

What's new

A cropped screenshot of the Feishin app, showing the left-hand sidebar with playlists organized into folders.
  • Playlist folders (sort of): Feishin can now organize playlists into folders. The folders don't actually represent any directories, but rather add cosmetic organization through the use of a delimiter, such as / in the playlist name.
    • So if you name your playlist Moods/Happy, you'll see your playlist named "Happy" inside a folder called "Moods."
  • Artist release type organizing: Artist pages on Navidrome and OpenSubsonic servers will now automatically organize releases by type, such as Album, EP, DJ Mix, and more, using tags.
  • Prevent OS suspend: In Settings > Window, you can now ask Feishin to block the OS from entering a suspend state while playback is happening.
  • Playback reporting on Subsonic: Feishin now supports OpenSubsonic's Playback Reporting extension, allowing you to collect and view listening data from Feishin.

What's getting better

  • Themes: There are two new themes available, called Everforest, in both dark and light editions. They use green organic tones that would look at home in Bodhi Linux.
    • You can also now search the themes dropdown menu.
  • Auto DJ: Feishin's built in DJ functionality can now suggest entire albums instead of only songs. You can also now toggle suggestions as either random or based on musical similarity.

Zooming out

Why this update matters: As reported in May's State of the Fin, more people are choosing Jellyfin to self-host their media. Feishin is one of the best ways to listen to music hosted on Jellyfin (or OpenSubsonic or Navidrome) servers.

My take: I'll stick with the Dracula theme, but I'm definitely going to take advantage of the folders tool and the enhanced auto DJ.
