COSMIC desktop environment is coming along nicely with 1.0.12
Picking a wallpaper and dragging-and-dropping files are getting a little easier.
System76 released COSMIC Epoch version 1.0.12 yesterday, adding several minor improvements to the burgeoning Linux desktop environment.
What's new
- HTML parsing in notification applet: Now when notifications use HTML, they get properly parsed by COSMIC's notification applet so they look nicer.
- Input methods for COSMIC Edit: You can now switch inputs to type in Chinese, Japanese, and other non-Latin languages in COSMIC's built-in text editor.
What's getting better
- Power state resume: When resuming from sleep, COSMIC now better handles and renders power state information.
- Wallpaper selection: COSMIC Settings can now follow symlinks when scanning for available wallpapers, making it easier to locate the wallpaper you need.
- Drag and drop: Some technical issues with drag-and-drop actions in COSMIC got fixed thanks to some work on the compositor.
Zooming out
Why this update matters: COSMIC is relatively new to the scene and stands apart from other desktop environments because it's written in memory-safe Rust and developed by a US-based Linux PC retailer. System76 in fact just released a new laptop that will have COSMIC-enabled Pop!_OS on it.

My take: I'd like to try COSMIC again soon to find out how much better the experience is since I last gave it a spin.

The fineprint: Read all the updates included in COSMIC Epoch 1.0.12 at the GitHub release page.
Get it now: You can update your COSMIC-painted Linux distro to get 1.0.12 now (or whenever it's pushed by your distro maintainers). To try a fresh COSMIC install, various distros like Pop!_OS and CachyOS make it easy.
