The developers of open source music streaming app Feishin have announced an update with several new features. A highlight is support for karaoke-style lyrics in OpenSubsonic and Navidrome servers.

What's new

  • Karaoke lyrics: Feishin 1.14 supports version 2 of the OpenSubsonic Song Lyrics extension, which added support for karaoke-style, timed, word-by-word lyric animations, plus multi-voice lyrics. Navidrome 63 added support for it, so as long as your Navidrome or OpenSubsonic server (with Song Lyrics v2 installed) is up-to-date, you can immediately start singing karaoke with your server.
  • Equalizer and compressor: A graphic interface letting you adjust how your music sounds is here, similar to what you'd see in other powerful music players like Supersonic.

  • Music speed controls: When pitch preseveration is disabled, you can now control music speed via semitones.
    • In the settings, you can enable "Microtonal pitch controls" for those enjoy listening to music between keys.

What's getting better

  • The theme selection: A new theme with dusty, low-contrast looks called "Zenburn" was added with Feishin 1.14.

  • Shortcuts: You can now right-click the volume icon to quickly change output devices through a context menu.
  • Shuffle: The shuffling algorithm was improved to make song selection more, well, random.

Zooming out

Why this update matters: Feishin is made for those listening to self-hosted music servers, which looks increasingly appealing as conventional streaming services reduce quality and raise subscription prices.

My take: I want to find a Jellyfin plugin for karaoke now.

Diving in

The fineprint: There are several more small tweaks and bugfixes you can read about in the Feishin 1.14 release notes.

Get it now: AppImage downloads for Feishin are available in the release notes linked above. You can also download Feishin from Flathub, where version 1.14 is already available.
