DietPi adds support for a new monitoring app and a new board

The April update also removes an old RSS reader.

The developers of DietPi announced over the weekend the release of DietPi v10.3, adding support for a server metrics tool and new or better support for various Single-Board Comptuers (SBCs).

What's new

  • Support for Orange Pi 4 LTS: Official support for the Orange Pi 4 LTS has come to DietPi, meaning you can get a dedicated and optimized image for it from the DietPi download page.
  • Systems monitor software: DietPi now comes with a script for automatically installing Prometheus, a service that gathers detailed metrics about servers and applications you're running.
  • Automatic startup for Amiberry-Lite: You can now configure Amiberry-Lite to start at boot, similar to the "fast boot" option for regular Amiberry.

What's getting better

  • Home Assistant installations: The environment for installing and managing Home Assistant has been improved, making the process much faster.
    * You can force a migration to the new environment on existing installations by running dietpi-software reinstall 157.
  • Various boards: If you're running DietPi on an Allwinner H5/H6, a Rockchip RK356x, or an Orange Pi Zero 2W, know that some major device-specific issues were fixed with v10.3.

What's going away

  • QuiteRSS: The simple RSS feed aggregator has been removed thanks years of neglect in its development.
    • If you're still running Bookworm as your DietPi base, you can still install it with apt install quiterss.
    • For everyone else running a DietPi desktop, the development team recommends switching to RSS Guard.

Zooming out

Why this update matters: DietPi continues to be one of the best options for making efficient use of your Raspberry Pi or other SBC. This matters more as computing prices stay at record highs.

My take: Prometheus will give me probably more stats than I know what to do with, but regardless I'll be upgrading my Raspberry Pi 4 running DietPi today. Also, my feed reader of choice happens to be RSS Guard as well.

Diving in

The fineprint: Read the release notes for DietPit v10.3 to make sure I didn't miss anything important.

Get it now: Head to the DietPi download page and find the image for your SBC or other computing device.
