DietPi is adding new board support and new automated software installations

This update brings support for the LubanCat 4 board, an inventory manager app, and a home security camera manager.

The DietPi development team released DietPi 10.7 over the weekend. It's a large update to the single-board computer-focused Linux distribution that adds new software, new capabilities, and an overhaul to the networking experience. Here are the details.

What's new

  • New board support: The LubanCat 4 single-board computer (SBC) now has a dedicated DietPi image for download.
  • ARM virtual machines: You can now run DietPi as a virtual machine on ARMv8 devices.
  • Homebox software: Homebox, a self-hosted home organization and inventory service, can now be easily installed with dietpi-software.
  • Scrypted software: You can now perform an automated install Scrypted using the dietpi-software tool. Scrypted lets you collect video feeds from many different cameras and pass them onto platforms like Google Home and Home Assistant, or to its own Scrypted NVR platform.
  • The dietpi-network tool: You now have the option to configure all of your network interfaces, including virtual ones, in one place by running dietpi-network in DietPi.

What's getting better

  • Board-specific USB issues: USB ports on the Orange Pi 5 and 5B that previously weren't working have been re-enabled. Also, drivers for USB-connected digital TV receivers on Allwinner-based SBCs have returned after being lost in previous kernels.
  • Time syncing: The time-syncing script has been optimized to more reliably establish connections with time servers. The script has also been moved to /boot/dietpi/func/dietpi-timesync to be more in line with DietPi's organizing conventions.

Zooming out

Why this update matters: DietPi is one of the best in the SBC Linux distribution game, with expansive dedicated board support and a lot of useful automated scripts for server deployment in particular.

My take: I'll be looking into Scrypted as a way to manage my own smart home cameras.
