5 Linux distros that had major updates in September

We saw an update from DietPi adding a new board, Emmabuntüs with a new TTS reader, and more.

Looking back at the month of September 2026, there were many release announcements among Linux distributions, some with exciting new features and fancy new looks. These are some of the most notable.

DietPi Linux

The DietPi operating system, designed to substitute Raspberry Pi OS on single-board computers like the Raspberry Pi, saw the arrival of version 10.7 to the in mid-September. It added and improved board support, and there's a new automated installation script for home security cameras. Emmabuntüs Debian Edition

The Emmabuntüs Collective announced the release of version 1.03 of its Emmabuntüs Debian Edition 6 operating system. In keeping with the project's emphasis on accessibility, this update comes with a new text-to-speech tool and an action menu that appears at the press of one key (either Right Ctrl or F12). MX Linux

One of the few Linux distributions still supporting 32-bit architectures, MX Linux was updated to version 25.3, nicknamed "Infinity." The welcome dialog and MX-Tools interface were overhauled, and it comes with new ISO verification and theme customization tools. You can read the official MX Linux 25.3 release notes to learn more.

Raspberry Pi OS

Not to be outdone by DietPi, the official desktop operating system for Raspberry Pi devices got a major overhaul in September. It includes a new launch icon dock, and several other general modernization efforts. Read more on the Raspberry Pi website.

Ubuntu (Noble Numbat)

An update for Ubuntu 24.04 LTS, nicknamed "Noble Numbat," arrived in mid-September. The update adds all the security updates so far to the ISO download, and the changes in version 24.04.5 are mostly technical, like an update to kernel 7.0 and a shift in the way firmware updates are delivered. There were a few releases that weren't technically major updates but are still worth mentioning. Ubuntu 26.10 arrived in beta, and so did Fedora Linux 45. Also, there were some interesting developments in the KDE Linux alpha.
